Description
Kelman Cystotome Cannula
The Kelman cystotome cannula is a 22 gauge irrigating tool with a fine cutting tip. Kelman’s name is closely tied to the rise of phaco cataract surgery. This pattern lets you open the anterior capsule while fluid keeps the chamber formed.
Kelman versus Kratz
Both are cystotome cannulas, and both cut and irrigate. However, the tip geometry differs between the two patterns. Many surgeons pick one based on training and habit. Some keep a Kelman for routine eyes and a second style for small pupils or dense lenses. If you are unsure, try both and keep the one that feels natural.
What the 22 gauge size offers
Here the only size is 22 gauge. This gives a firm shaft that resists flex during the opening. It also delivers good flow for a deep chamber. In detail:
- Size: 22 gauge
- Fine cutting tip
- Irrigating shaft
- Syringe or line fitting
Control during the opening
Prime the line, then enter with the tip on its side. Once inside, turn the point down to meet the capsule. Use small moves from the fingers, not the wrist. Finally, turn the tip back before you leave the eye.
Reprocessing the Kelman cannula
Flush the bore at once, since cortex and saline dry fast. Next, soak, rinse and dry it. Inspect the point under magnification before you pack it. The Kelman tool reaches you non-sterile; clean and sterilize it, then it can serve case after case.
