Jackson Trachea Retractor

The Jackson trachea retractor is a tracheal hook named after the laryngologist Chevalier Jackson. Surgeons use it to hold tissue or the trachea during tracheostomy.

A classic tracheal hook

Jackson’s name appears on many airway instruments, including tubes and hooks. This retractor belongs to that family. As a result, many ENT surgeons already know how it handles.

Four combinations

We offer two lengths, 15 cm and 17 cm. Then you choose Blunt or Sharp ends. That gives four versions, so you can match reach and tip to the job.

Blunt versus sharp

A blunt end retracts soft tissue with less chance of catching it, so it suits the skin and muscle layers. A sharp end, by contrast, grips the tracheal wall firmly. Many trays hold one of each for the two tasks.

Which length

The 15 cm version suits slimmer necks and tighter fields. Meanwhile, the 17 cm version adds reach for deeper work. If your caseload varies, keeping both lengths makes sense.

Caring for your Jackson trachea retractor

Clean the hook promptly after surgery and scrub inside the curve. If you have the sharp model, take care not to knock the point. Then dry the retractor and sterilize it with your tracheostomy set.
