Description
Heath Ligature Scissors
The Heath ligature scissors remove sutures with a hooked lower blade. Once under the stitch, that hook lifts it so the upper blade can cut cleanly.
Hooked lower blade
The small hook catches the suture loop. As a result, cutting is quick and the patient feels little tug.
Size of the Heath ligature scissors
At 15 cm, they are longer than many suture scissors. Therefore, they suit stitches in harder-to-reach places.
Typical uses
Nurses and clinicians remove sutures on wards and in clinics. They also cut ligature ends in theatre.
Technique
Slide the hook under the stitch, lift slightly and cut. Then pull the suture out with forceps.
Pairing
Fine dissecting forceps help lift and remove the cut suture. Together they make removal smooth.
Hygiene
Clean and sterilise between patients.
Heath ligature scissors for deep stitches
Some stitches sit in creases or awkward spots, such as behind the ear. In those cases, the extra length of the Heath pattern reaches them while the hand stays clear of the patient’s view.
Speed on clinic lists
In addition, wound clinics often remove many sutures in one session. Since the hook catches each stitch on the first pass, the work goes quickly and comfortably.
