Hartmann Eustachian Catheter

The Hartmann eustachian catheter is a slender metal tube for otology. An ENT doctor passes it along the floor of the nose to the opening of the eustachian tube, then blows air through it to inflate the middle ear.

What catheterization does

When the eustachian tube fails to open, pressure in the middle ear can drop. Air delivered through the catheter helps equalize that pressure. The doctor may also listen through an auscultation tube to judge whether air reaches the ear.

Five sizes

You can order the catheter in 2, 2.5, 3, 4 or 5 mm. Smaller sizes suit narrow nasal passages. Larger ones, meanwhile, pass more air and suit roomier anatomy. Many clinics keep a small range so they can match each patient.

Where it fits today

Eustachian catheterization is an older technique. Nevertheless, some ENT and hearing specialists still rely on it for diagnosis and treatment. It also appears in teaching sets for otology training.

Choosing sizes

Start with a mid-range size such as 3 mm. Then add a smaller and a larger catheter for patients at either end. If you want the full range, simply order all five.

Caring for your Hartmann eustachian catheter

Flush the bore with water right after use. Next, pass a fine cleaning brush or wire through the lumen and rinse again. Dry the inside thoroughly, for example with compressed air, before sterilization.
