Description
Hammer Ca.110mm Wooden Handle
The wooden handle hammer pairs a steel head of about 110 mm with a light wooden shaft. It drives chisels and osteotomes with controlled taps, and the wood softens the shock felt in the hand.
Head and handle
The steel head gives enough mass to move an osteotome. Meanwhile, the wooden shaft absorbs some vibration. As a result, repeated taps feel less harsh on the wrist.
Size of the wooden handle hammer
The tool measures 28 cm overall. That length gives a good swing without much effort. In addition, the head length of about 110 mm leaves room for both faces.
Typical uses
Surgeons use it with chisels, gouges and osteotomes. For example, it helps shape bone in general and plastic surgery. It also appears in plaster rooms and anatomy labs.
Why wood
Wood is light, warm to hold and slightly flexible. Therefore, the grip stays steady through a long case. However, it needs gentler cleaning than an all-steel hammer.
Striking well
Hold the shaft near the end for power. Alternatively, choke up on the handle for small, precise taps. Always strike the chisel squarely so the force runs straight down the blade.
Choosing a hammer
Heavier heads move more bone with each blow. By contrast, a medium head like this one gives better control. Many trays therefore carry two weights.

Looking after the wood
Wipe the shaft clean rather than soaking it. Dry the hammer straight away after washing. Also, check the head for looseness before each case.
The checks behind each hammer
The steel head of this hammer carries three years against manufacturing defects, counted from delivery. Ahead of dispatch, our Atlanta inspector studies every hammer by eye.
