Description
Green Fixation Forceps
Green fixation forceps help hold the globe still during eye surgery. They come in 5.0mm and 10.0mm sizes. You can also choose a version with a spring catch, which keeps the hold in place, or one without.
What the spring catch does
A spring catch locks the jaws once you close them. So the forceps keeps its grip even when you relax your hand. This frees you to focus on the next step. Without the catch, however, you control the hold the whole time and can release it at once.
5.0mm or 10.0mm
The two sizes give a narrow or a wide hold. Pick the one that matches the area you need to fix.
- 5.0mm: a narrow hold for tight spaces.
- 10.0mm: a wider hold that spreads the grip.
- With catch: steady hold without constant pressure.
- Without catch: quick, simple release.
Typical use
Surgeons often fix the globe before they make a cut or pass a suture. For example, strabismus and other eye muscle work may need a firm hold. The forceps grips near the limbus, then the surgeon turns the eye to the best position.
Grip and release
Hold the forceps close to the jaws for control. Then close gently until the teeth engage. If your version has a catch, check that it releases smoothly before surgery. Also, never twist the eye hard while holding it.
After each case
Rinse and brush the jaws and the catch. Next, open and close the catch several times to clear fluid. Dry everything before you pack it. Finally, inspect the teeth for wear.
Ordering your Green forceps
Green forceps arrive non-sterile and turn reusable once cleaned and sterilized. With or without a catch, these forceps include three years against manufacturing defects. Green forceps steel meets ASTM F899. For finer teeth, see the Dermot Pierse fixation forceps. Also visit our eye surgery shop or read the Intrace help page.
