Description
Gil-Vernet Type Retractor
A narrow bladed hand held retractor associated with the intrasinusal approach to the renal pelvis. The blades are deliberately slim, because the space being held open is a plane between the renal sinus fat and the pelvis rather than an open wound.
Blade widths
Six widths from 8 mm through to 23 mm. The narrow end of the range is for the initial plane, the wider blades for holding it once it is developed. A set covering several widths is more useful than any single blade, since the retractor is changed as the exposure grows.
Blade shape
Slightly dished and turned through a right angle to a flat handle, so the blade sits in the plane while the handle stays out of it. The dish matters: a flat blade of this width tends to slip out of a fatty plane, where a dished one holds.
Care
Slim blades bend, and a bent blade of this type is no longer usable because the plane it holds is defined by its shape. Check each blade against a flat surface, reprocess without stacking anything on top, and dry fully before storage.
