Description
Gelpi Retractor
The Gelpi retractor holds tissue apart on its own, using a single sharp point on each arm. Standard versions come in 10, 15 and 18 cm, and Lok-Tite versions in 13 and 18 cm.
Single sharp points
Each arm ends in one sharp point rather than a row of teeth. So it grips deep tissue in a small footprint and leaves more room to work. Also, the narrow tips suit tight, deep spaces.
Standard or Lok-Tite
The standard version comes in 10, 15 and 18 cm. By contrast, the Lok-Tite version adds a locking mechanism at 13 and 18 cm. Therefore, pick Lok-Tite if you want a firmer, locked spread.
Where surgeons use it
Orthopedic and spine surgeons use it to hold deep muscle apart. In addition, gynecologic and general teams use it for smaller openings. Then the surgeon works with both hands free.
Choosing a length
Short sizes suit small, shallow wounds near the surface. Meanwhile, the 18 cm Gelpi retractor reaches deeper orthopedic exposures. So many trays carry two sizes side by side.
Looking after Gelpi retractor
Cover the sharp points before and after cleaning to protect reprocessing staff from needlestick-style injuries. Next, brush each point and the joint area with care. Finally, store the instrument with tip guards in place.
