Description
Finsen Retractor
The Finsen retractor is among the smallest self-retaining spreaders on a minor tray. At 5 cm long, it keeps a short incision open without an assistant.
Three teeth per side
Each arm ends in three teeth, giving a balanced 3 x 3 grip. Because both sides match, the frame pulls evenly on the two edges. So the field opens in a straight line.
Choosing sharp or blunt
Sharp teeth anchor well in skin and firm tissue. Alternatively, blunt teeth press rather than pierce, which suits softer layers. Many sites keep one of each for different cases.
Why the small size matters
A 5 cm frame sits almost flat beside a short cut. Therefore it leaves room for fine instruments and fingers. It also stays out of the light path during close work.
Typical uses
Surgeons reach for a Finsen retractor during small skin excisions and superficial procedures. In addition, it helps in hand, foot and scalp work where space is tight. Next to the 7 cm Martin version, it handles the shortest openings.
Looking after Finsen retractor
Rinse the teeth promptly, since blood dries fast in small gaps. Then clean the joint area with a soft nylon brush and plenty of water. Also, keep it in a tray slot that protects the points.
