Description
Finsen Mod. Martin Retractor
The Finsen Martin retractor is a small self-retaining spreader for short, shallow incisions. It holds the wound edges apart, so your hands stay free for the task.
Finsen Martin retractor: a modified Martin pattern
This version adapts the Martin pattern to the compact Finsen frame. As a result, it opens a small field without crowding the surgeon. Its short 7 cm length keeps the frame low beside the incision.
Three teeth facing four
One arm carries three teeth and the other carries four. That way, the unequal count spreads the hold along both edges. So the skin tends to stay put once you open the frame.
Sharp or blunt teeth
Sharp teeth bite firmly into skin and thin fascia. By contrast, blunt teeth rest against tissue with less risk of puncture. Then choose blunt near vessels, nerves or delicate structures.
Where it helps
Small excisions, lumps and bumps, and minor wound work suit this frame. Also, it frees an assistant who would otherwise hold two hand retractors. For a slightly bigger opening, a Finsen Martin retractor at 7 cm covers more ground than the 5 cm Finsen.
Reprocessing Finsen Martin retractor
Close the frame fully before it goes into the washer. Next, work a small brush between the teeth to lift dried tissue. Finally, inspect each tip for bends and store the spreader closed.
