Description
Farabeuf Periosteal Raspatory
The Farabeuf raspatory is a classic flat stripping instrument, 15 cm long. It removes periosteum from bone surfaces with short, firm strokes.
A classic design
Louis Hubert Farabeuf was a famous teacher of surgical anatomy. Furthermore, many instruments carry the name, and this raspatory is among the best known. Its flat blade and sharp edge make it simple and reliable.
Compact length
At 15 cm, it suits superficial bones and smaller exposures. Therefore it is a good choice for ribs, the clavicle and the bones of the hand and foot. It also feels light in the hand.
Uses of the Farabeuf raspatory
Thoracic and orthopedic surgeons use it to strip periosteum. For example, it frees a rib before resection. It also clears bone surfaces before plating.
Technique
Hold the blade flat and push along the bone. Then lift the freed periosteum aside. Repeat in short strokes until the exposure is complete.
Around ribs
Ribs need stripping on both the outer and inner surfaces. Therefore the flat Farabeuf blade works along the outer face first. Afterward, a curved instrument often completes the inner side.
