Description
Desmarres Retractor
The Desmarres lid retractor holds the eyelid back with a smooth, curved blade. Surgeons and clinicians use it in eye exams and in lid and eye surgery. We offer a wide spread of blade widths and heights.
How the curved blade works
The blade hooks gently under the lid margin. Then you lift or turn the lid away from the eye. Because the blade curves, it spreads the pressure over a wide area. So the lid stays back without pinching.
Blade width choices
Width sets how much of the lid the blade holds.
- 7.0mm: small lids and children.
- 9.0mm and 11.0mm: most adult lids.
- 13.0mm: wide hold on larger lids.
Blade height choices
Height runs from 8.0mm through 10.0mm, 12.0mm, 14.0mm and 16.0mm to 18.0mm. A short blade suits a shallow lid or quick exam. A taller blade, however, reaches further and holds more tissue. So match the height to the depth you need.
Common uses
Clinicians often use it to turn the upper lid for an exam. In surgery, it may hold the lid back during chalazion, lid or globe work. It can also help find and remove debris under the lid. In each case, a gentle hold matters most.
Care and checks
Clean the Desmarres lid retractor after each use, since tears and blood can dry in the curve. Then dry it fully. Also, inspect the edge for burrs, because a rough edge can scratch the lid.
Ordering your retractor
Desmarres retractors ship non-sterile; process them as usual, and each one keeps returning to service. Desmarres blades come with three years against manufacturing defects on any width or height. Retractor steel meets ASTM F899. To clear a chalazion, pair it with the Hebra curette. See our eyelid and eye instruments or our buyer FAQ.
