Description
Cushing Dura Hook
The Cushing dura hook is a small sharp hook for lifting the dura mater. Neurosurgeons use it to raise the membrane before the first cut and to hold edges up during work.
Tenting the dura
The dura lies close to the brain and spinal cord. So, lifting it before cutting keeps the blade away from underlying tissue. The sharp tip catches the membrane securely and raises it into a small tent.
One 15 cm sharp version
We stock the Cushing dura hook in a 15 cm length with a sharp tip. The short length suits superficial cranial openings and shallow spinal work. For tip dimensions, just email us and a colleague will inspect one.
Use during opening
First, the surgeon hooks the dura and lifts it. Next, a blade makes a small incision under the tented area. Then scissors extend the opening. In addition, the hook helps hold dural edges while the surgeon places stay sutures.
Sharp or blunt hooks
A sharp hook gives a firm catch on thick dura. However, some surgeons prefer a blunt hook over thin membrane. If you want the choice, you could keep a blunt pattern alongside this one.
Caring for your Cushing dura hook
Rinse the tip gently after use, taking care not to bend it. Next, brush the shaft and check the point under good light. Finally, dry it and use a tip protector during sterilization.

Ordering this hook
We stand behind the hook with a three-year warranty for workmanship problems. Someone in our Atlanta office checks the sharp tip by hand before shipment.
