Description
Barraquer-Troutman Needle Holder, 18 cm Straight
The Barraquer-Troutman needle holder pairs a rounded spring handle with straight jaws. This model is 18 cm long, and it is sold as one fixed version. It suits fine suturing in eye surgery, where the needle must turn smoothly.
The Troutman variation
Troutman’s name marks a refinement of the Barraquer pattern for microsurgery. In practice, the handle still rolls in the fingers like a Barraquer. However, the longer body gives the hand a steadier rest during long cases.
Why 18 cm
At 18 cm, the handle sits well back in the hand. So the fingers stay clear of the field, which helps under a microscope. The extra length also gives reach when the eye sits deep in the orbit.
One fixed Troutman model
- One holder, 18 cm long
- Straight jaws
- Round spring handle
- Reusable after sterilization
Loading and driving the needle
Grip the needle about a third of the way from the thread end. Then roll the handle to follow the curve of the needle. Because the spring does most of the work, a light hold is enough.
Keeping it in good order
Fine jaws can wear if you force big needles. So save this holder for small sizes, and pick a heavier tool for thick sutures. A short loupe check of the tips after each wash also catches early wear. After each use, rinse the tips, clean them with a soft brush, and dry the spring before storage.
Delivery is non-sterile; a full clean and sterilization makes it ready, and it can be reprocessed many times. We specify stainless steel matching ASTM F899 for it. You are protected for three years against manufacturing defects on this holder. For a 14 cm length, view the 14 and 18 cm Barraquer.
