Barraquer (Colibri) Eye Speculum

The Barraquer colibri eye speculum is one of the smallest frames we carry. You can pick 3cm or 4cm. Colibri means hummingbird, and the name fits: this is a tiny, light speculum for small eyes and fine work.

Why the Colibri name matters

Eye tools marked Colibri are small and fine by design. This speculum follows that idea. It holds the lids open with a slim frame that adds little weight. As a result, you get a clear view of a small eye without a crowded field.

3cm or 4cm Colibri: which one?

Choose 3cm for infants and very small lids. It opens the least and puts the least stretch on the lids. Meanwhile, the 4cm size gives a bit more spread for older children and small adult eyes. Many pediatric teams keep both sizes, so the right frame is always within reach on a busy list.

Colibri use notes

• Pick the smallest size that still gives a good view.
• Seat the blades with a light touch.
• Watch the lids for blanching while the frame is open.
• Remove it gently once you finish.

Looking after a tiny speculum

Tiny frames can bend or get lost, so store this one in its own slot. After each case, rinse it, clean it and dry it with care. It ships non-sterile, so it needs a full cycle before first use. Then you can reuse it over many cases.
