Description
Auvard-Berlind Vaginal Speculum
The Auvard-Berlind speculum is a weighted posterior-wall speculum for vaginal surgery. A 1.14 kg weight keeps the blade in position, so no one has to hold it.
The Berlind hole
The Berlind version has a hole through the weight. So fluid can drain away instead of pooling around the blade. Also, this detail sets it apart from the plain Auvard pattern.
Hands-free retraction
The weight rests the blade on the posterior vaginal wall with no hand needed. Therefore, the assistant has both hands free for other tasks. Meanwhile, the surgeon keeps a steady view throughout.
Two blade sizes
Choose an 83 x 38 mm or a 102 x 45 mm blade. Both share the same 1.14 kg fixed weight. Then pick the blade length that reaches the depth you need for the planned procedure.
Setting up
Position the patient in lithotomy before you insert the Auvard-Berlind speculum. Then let the weight settle the blade against the posterior wall. However, keep the drainage hole clear during the case.
Reprocessing Auvard-Berlind speculum
Rinse the drainage hole thoroughly, because fluid passes through it during surgery. Next, clean the blade and weight with a brush and neutral detergent. Finally, dry it and store it low, since the weight makes it heavy to lift.
