Arlt Lens Scoop
The Arlt lens scoop is a classic tool for delivering the lens in manual cataract work. You can choose a serrated or a smooth working face. Both share the same shallow cradle, so the choice depends on how much grip you want.
Serrated or smooth Arlt?
A smooth face glides easily, so it treats tissue gently. A serrated face adds grip, which helps with a firm or slippery nucleus. Many surgeons keep a smooth one as the default, then reach for the serrated one when the lens fights back.
Ferdinand von Arlt’s legacy
Arlt worked in Vienna in the 1800s and shaped how eye disease was taught. His name still lives on in several eye tools. Likewise, this scoop reflects his era: plain, sturdy and easy to clean.
Typical Arlt scoop tasks
Use it for:
- Lifting the nucleus out through a larger wound
- Guiding lens pieces toward the opening
- Supporting the lens while you press from outside
How to hold the Arlt
Lay the Arlt handle over your fingers, much as you would hold a pen. Then tilt the cradle slightly so the rim leads. As the lens rides up, keep the motion slow and let the shape of the scoop do the work.
Keeping both faces clean
Smooth scoops rinse clean fast. Serrated ones, however, need a brush across the grooves. In both cases, dry the scoop fully and check the rim for nicks before it goes back in the tray.
How to order your Arlt
Smooth and serrated Arlt scoops both ship unsterile; wash the cradle, run a sterilizing cycle, and the Arlt is ready for many more cataract cases. Arlt steel also meets the ASTM F899 standard. Whichever face you choose, the Arlt lens scoop is warranted for three years against manufacturing defects. Next, explore the full ophthalmology range, or compare the Weber lens scoop in two figures.
