Magill Forceps
Magill forceps are the angled intubating forceps designed by Sir Ivan Magill, the Irish anaesthetist who did much to establish modern endotracheal technique. The distinctive double-angled shank keeps the operator’s hand out of the line of sight during laryngoscopy, which is what makes them the standard instrument for directing a tube or catheter through the cords.Two sizes, one designThe adult pattern runs about 9¾ inches and the child pattern about 7½. The geometry is otherwise identical — the smaller size is for paediatric airways and for retrieving foreign bodies from smaller pharynxes, a job Magill forceps are used for as often as intubation itself.The tips are ringed and serrated to hold a soft tube or a nasogastric catheter without cutting it. Also listed as catheter-introducing forceps, which is the same instrument under its other common name.
