Description
Ziegler Eye Knife
The Ziegler eye knife is a slim, fine knife for small cuts in the eye. Surgeons know it for cutting thin membranes, such as a secondary membrane. We offer four sizes: 3.5mm, 5.0mm, 6.0mm and 7.0mm.
A narrow blade for fine work
The blade is thin and sharp, with a small cutting edge. So it can enter through a tiny opening. Then the surgeon makes a short, controlled cut. In fact, the narrow shape is the whole point of the design.
Four sizes to choose from
The size reflects the working part of the blade. Choose by the cut you need.
- 3.5mm: the smallest, for very fine cuts.
- 5.0mm and 6.0mm: middle sizes for many tasks.
- 7.0mm: the largest in the range.
Where it may be used
Historically, surgeons used a Ziegler knife to cut a thin membrane in the eye. They may also use it for other small, precise incisions. However, many units now use lasers for some of these cases. So check your own practice before you order.
Safe handling
Treat the edge with care at all times. Keep a guard on the blade except during use. Also, pass it handle first to the surgeon. After surgery, clean it manually, never in a crowded basket.
Keeping the edge
A dull knife pushes tissue instead of cutting. For this reason, check the edge under magnification before each case. If it looks rolled or nicked, retire it.
Ordering the Ziegler knife
Ziegler knives ship non-sterile. Each knife goes back into use after cleaning and sterilization. Ziegler blades carry three years against manufacturing defects at every size. Knife steel meets ASTM F899. For fine membrane scissors, see the Vannas membrane scissors. Browse our ophthalmic knives and tools or the FAQ center.
Ziegler knives are for professional use only. See our blade care notes and shipping rules.
