Description
West Keratoplastic Gouge
The West keratoplastic gouge is a small hand gouge with a cupped cutting end. It appears with our keratoplasty tools. We offer it in one standard version, and we keep this description brief, because uses for this pattern vary between surgeons.
What a gouge is
A gouge is a hand tool with a curved, cupped blade. Unlike a flat chisel, it lifts a shallow scoop of material as it cuts. That shape makes it useful when a surgeon needs to remove a small, rounded amount of tissue.
Check it against your training
Instrument names vary over time and between catalogues. So, before you order, confirm that this West pattern matches the tool your team expects. If you are unsure, send us a photo or a description and we will help.
How to handle a fine gouge
- Hold it in a firm pencil grip
- Brace your hand before you cut
- Take small, controlled strokes
- Keep the cupped edge away from other steel
Paired West pattern
We also list a West osteotome under the same name. Teams that use one often keep the other on the same tray. Still, each tool does a different job, so order the one your procedure needs.
Caring for the West edge
Clean the cup soon after use, because tissue can dry inside it. Then check the edge under magnification for nicks. Finally, store it with a guard on the blade.
The West gouge ships non-sterile; clean and sterilize it, and the gouge is ready to reuse. We use stainless conforming to ASTM F899 for the blade. West gouge buyers have cover for three years against manufacturing defects; West edges are included. See the keratoplasty and eye surgery range, the West osteotome, or our FAQ desk page.
The West gouge is for professional use only. Read our West care advice for blades and shipping times.
