Description

Smith-Petersen Osteotome

The Smith-Petersen osteotome is a solid, mallet-driven blade for cutting and shaping bone. It carries the name of Marius Smith-Petersen, whose work shaped modern hip surgery.

A workhorse pattern

This blade has more body than the slim Lambotte style. Therefore it stands up to firm blows in dense bone. Even so, the double bevel keeps the cut centered on the line you mark.

Widths and edge shapes

Pick from 6, 9, 13, 16, 19, 25 or 32 mm. Every width comes with a straight edge or a curved one. So one family covers fine notching as well as broad cuts across the iliac crest.

Who reaches for the Smith-Petersen osteotome

Hip, spine and trauma surgeons use it for osteotomies, graft harvest and removal of bone spurs. Also, general orthopedic trays often hold two or three widths of this pattern. The wider blades shine on the pelvis, while the 6 and 9 mm sizes reach into tighter corners.

Smith-Petersen osteotome options

  • Width choices from 6 mm to 32 mm, seven in all
  • Each width offered straight or curved
  • Twin-bevel edge driven with a mallet
  • Delivered non-sterile for your own reprocessing

Keeping the edge sharp

Wipe off blood and bone dust before it dries. After that, wash, rinse and dry the blade with care. A nicked edge tears rather than cuts, so have it honed as soon as you spot damage.

Warranty and inspection

Before shipment, one of our Atlanta team views the Smith-Petersen pattern closely. Should this osteotome develop a build fault, you still have three years against manufacturing defects. The FDA recognizes ASTM F899 as a reference for surgical instrument steel. Larger theaters order a backup osteotome to cover reprocessing time. Matching pieces wait in the orthopedic range. To round out the tray, try our Smith-Petersen gouge. Want stock for a new tray? Get in touch for a quick answer. The order FAQ explains the ordering steps.
