Description
Schumacher Bone Lever
The Schumacher bone lever is a long retractor with an 18 mm blade. It comes in 28 cm and 36 cm lengths for deep exposures.
Two lengths
The 28 cm lever suits most hip and thigh exposures. Meanwhile, the 36 cm lever reaches deeper in larger patients. Both keep the same 18 mm blade.
Why length matters
Deep bones sit under thick muscle. Therefore a long lever keeps the assistant’s hand out of the field. It also gives leverage to hold heavy tissue.
Who uses the Schumacher bone lever
Hip replacement and trauma teams use it around the femur and acetabulum. It also helps in pelvic surgery. Also, some teams use it as a Wagner alternative.
Technique
Place the tip on bone under direct vision. Then pivot on the wound edge to open the view. Recheck placement whenever the limb moves.
Matching length to patient
Larger patients carry deeper bones and thicker muscle. So the 36 cm version keeps the assistant’s hand clear. In contrast, the 28 cm version feels quicker in average-size patients.
