Description

Papavero-Caspar Specula

Papavero-Caspar specula hold open a narrow approach in microsurgical spine surgery. Surgeons use them to keep a small, deep working channel clear under the microscope.

Narrow, deep access

Microsurgical lumbar techniques aim for a small skin opening. However, the target still sits deep. The specula blades keep soft tissue back along the whole depth of the channel.

Three sizes

We offer 80 x 11 mm, 90 x 13 mm and 100 x 15 mm. The first figure gives depth and the second gives width. So the 100 x 15 mm size suits the deepest approaches, while 80 x 11 mm fits smaller patients.

How they fit the Caspar system

These specula belong to the Caspar family of spine instruments. Surgeons often use them with a Caspar-type retractor frame. Check your frame first, and contact us if you need help confirming a fit.

Selecting blade sizes

Match the depth to the patients you treat most. For instance, many teams keep 90 x 13 mm as a standard and add another size for outliers. We can advise if you tell us your current set.

Caring for your Papavero-Caspar specula

Rinse each blade straight after use to stop blood drying on it. Then wash them with neutral detergent and a gentle brush, paying attention to edges. Dry the specula thoroughly before sterilization and storage.
