The Orringer retractor holds the cheeks and lips away from the surgical field so both hands stay free for the procedure. According to our supplier catalogue, it is made of spring steel that flexes to a comfortable fit for the patient. That flexibility sets it apart from rigid retractors, which press harder at the corners of the mouth.

Why Spring Steel Matters Here

A rigid frame must be sized exactly, or it pinches. However, spring steel gives a little as the patient opens and closes, then returns to shape. As a result, the retractor keeps steady tension through a long implant or grafting appointment without constant repositioning by the assistant.

Regular or Small?

Two sizes are available, and the only difference the catalogue lists is the overall size:

• Regular: the default for most adult patients and for full arch access.
• Small: a reduced version for patients with a narrow opening, smaller adults and many teenagers.

If your patient mix is broad, keep both on the shelf. Then the assistant can switch sizes as soon as the first one looks too tight or too loose.

Seating It Comfortably

First, moisten the lips so the frame slides rather than drags. Next, ease one side into the vestibule, then the other, and let the spring settle. Also, check the commissures after placement, because a small adjustment early saves discomfort later.

Checks Before Shipping

Each retractor is inspected in the United States before it heads out of our Atlanta stock. You get coverage for three years against manufacturing defects on both sizes, so a frame that loses its spring early is replaced. It arrives non-sterile; clean it thoroughly and sterilize it before the first patient.
