Description
Martin Dressing Forceps, Modified Pattern
The Martin dressing forceps are a modified mid-length pattern for swabbing and handling dressings. At 17 cm, they suit ward and theatre work alike, which makes them a practical all-rounder.
A practical length
Seventeen centimetres is long enough for most wounds yet short enough for fine control. Consequently, nurses use it for dressings as often as surgeons use it in theatre.
Straight or curved Martin dressing forceps
The straight version suits open, flat wounds. In contrast, the curved version reaches into cavities and around drains.
Typical uses
Teams use it to apply and remove dressings, pack small wounds and swab. It also helps when cleaning around drain sites and stomas.
The modification
The modified jaws hold gauze more evenly than the original design. As a result, a dressing stays flat while it is lifted into place.
Ward and theatre
Because the size suits both settings, many hospitals stock the same pattern in each. Also, that keeps staff familiar with one tool wherever they work.
Clean technique
Use one forceps to remove the old dressing and a second, sterile pair to apply the new one. In this way, the clean pair never touches the soiled gauze.
