Description
Martinez-Kilner Retractor with Swivel Action
The Martinez-Kilner swivel retractor holds small flaps open in facial and nasal surgery. Its 10 mm blade turns on the handle, so the blade stays flat while the hand changes angle.
How the swivel works
The blade pivots where it meets the shaft. As a result, it settles against the tissue on its own. Meanwhile, the assistant can shift position without lifting the blade off the flap.
Size of the Martinez-Kilner swivel retractor
It measures 8 cm overall with a 10 mm wide blade. That compact build suits the nose, eyelids and lips. In addition, it leaves plenty of room for scissors and forceps nearby.
Where it helps most
Rhinoplasty, cleft repair and small facial excisions all use it. For example, it lifts the skin envelope over the nasal tip. It also holds a lip flap during closure.
Swivel or fixed blade
The fixed pattern gives a firm, set angle. By contrast, the swivel blade adapts as the field changes. Many surgeons therefore keep both on the same facial tray.
Handling tips
Rest the blade under the edge and lift gently. Next, let the swivel find its own angle instead of twisting the wrist. Finally, release the pull now and then so the flap edge stays healthy.
