Hurd Needle

The Hurd needle is a long, curved ENT pattern for work deep in the throat. Surgeons use it in the oropharynx, where a curved shaft reaches spots that a straight one cannot.

Why the curve matters

The tip swings away from the shaft in a gentle arc. As a result, the surgeon can approach tissue from the side instead of head on. That helps when the tongue and teeth crowd the view.

Right and left versions

We offer two versions: one curves to the right and one curves to the left. Many surgeons therefore keep both, so each side of the throat has a matching tool. Both share a length of about 21 cm.

Where it sits on the tray

Throat trays often hold a mouth gag, a tongue depressor, seizing forceps and dissectors. This needle joins them as a fine working tool. Meanwhile, the gag keeps the mouth open so both hands stay free.

Caring for your Hurd needle

Wipe the tip during the case so debris does not dry on it. After surgery, rinse the full length and scrub the shaft gently with nylon bristles. Then dry it completely and store it where the fine point cannot strike other steel.
