Description
Heaney-Kanter Hysterectomy Forceps
The Heaney-Kanter forceps is a Heaney-family hysterectomy clamp of about 20 cm. It secures pedicles so the surgeon can divide and ligate them.
A Heaney variant
This clamp belongs to the Heaney family, alongside Rezak and Ballantine. So it shares their general role in hysterectomy. However, surgeons who trained on Kanter often ask for it by name.
Length
About 20 cm long, this clamp works well in the confined space of a vaginal approach. Also, it handles shallow abdominal pedicles when the pelvis allows easy access. Then, for deeper work, a longer Faure or Segond clamp adds reach.
In use
First, the surgeon places the clamp across the pedicle. Next, a cut follows along one side of the jaws. Finally, a suture ties off the tissue before the clamp comes away.
Mixing Heaney clamps
Heaney-Kanter forceps can sit on the same tray as Rezak and Ballantine clamps. That way, each surgeon finds a familiar pattern. Plus, all three share a length of about 20 cm.
Cleaning Heaney-Kanter forceps
Wipe the jaws clean in theater, then send the Heaney-Kanter clamp for reprocessing. Next, open it fully and scrub every surface in the washer or by hand. Finally, dry it and store it apart from heavier retractors that could knock the tips out of line.
