Hartmann artery forceps are a small, baby-mosquito pattern hemostat. At 10 cm, they suit fine, superficial work.

Jaw options

You can choose straight or curved jaws. In addition, each comes serrated or with 1:2 teeth at the tip.

The short length keeps the rings close to the field. Therefore it suits small incisions where a longer hemostat would get in the way.

In practice

Surgeons often use the Hartmann for small skin vessels and minor procedures. Also, clinics keep a few on dressing and suture trays. Because the jaws are short, close them fully before you let go, so the ratchet holds. Also, check the ratchet engages on the first tooth before each case. A loose ratchet on a small clamp can let the jaws spring open at the wrong moment.

Rinse off blood before it dries on the short jaws. Then clean the box joint with a brush and dry the forceps thoroughly before sterilization.
