Graefe Fixation Forceps

The Graefe fixation forceps is a classic tool for holding the eye steady. It comes in an 11 cm length, with or without a spring catch. So you can choose a forceps that locks closed or one that you control by hand at every moment.

With spring catch

A spring catch lets the forceps hold its grip once closed. As a result, an assistant can keep fixation without squeezing the whole time. It also helps in long steps where a steady hold matters most.

Without spring catch

The plain version releases the moment you relax your fingers. Therefore, it gives instant control and fine feedback. Many surgeons prefer it for short fixation, where they want to let go at once.

Choosing between the two

Think about who holds the forceps. For example, if an assistant fixes the eye for you, the catch saves effort. However, if you fix the eye yourself, the plain version often feels more natural.
